The Detroit Lions have agreed to a one-year contract with defensive back Christian Izien, a source confirmed to Baltimore Chronicle via The Detroit News. Izien, 25, brings 15 games of NFL starting experience to the Lions’ secondary, making him the first outside defender acquired by the team in this year’s free agency. The former Rutgers standout went undrafted in 2023 but earned a spot on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ initial 53-man roster, appearing in all 17 games as a rookie, including four starts.
In his second NFL season, Izien started 10 games and played approximately 75% of the team’s defensive snaps before transitioning to a reserve role in 2025, contributing primarily on special teams. Standing 5-foot-10 and weighing 197 pounds, Izien offers significant flexibility for Detroit’s backfield, which faces uncertainty at safety, nickel corner, and outside corner positions.
Following the departure of Amik Robertson to the Washington Commanders in free agency, Izien is expected to compete for the starting nickel cornerback role. He logged 657 snaps at nickel corner during his rookie year before shifting to free safety, where he played most of the 2024 season. Additionally, he provides depth and coverage options for a safety group that has questions around the health of Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch.
Across his three-year career, Izien has recorded five pass breakups and three interceptions, with one notable interception coming against Lions quarterback Jared Goff during a 20-16 Buccaneers win at Ford Field in Week 2 of the 2024 season. Known for his physicality, Izien has accumulated 165 combined tackles through his time in the NFL.
