The U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Fulton County, Georgia, on December 13, 2025, seeking access to records from the 2020 presidential election, Baltimore Chronicle reports. The suit comes amid ongoing efforts by former President Donald Trump and his allies to investigate the election he lost, with the DOJ aiming to obtain documents such as ballot stubs and signature envelopes.
The civil division of the Justice Department detailed in the lawsuit that Attorney General Pam Bondi is examining Fulton County’s compliance with federal election law. The DOJ stated that it sent a letter to the Fulton County clerk in November requesting the records, but the office did not respond.
This legal action follows the dismissal of an election interference case in Georgia against Trump and 18 co-defendants, who had been indicted over attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in the state. Trump pleaded not guilty to the charges, which were dismissed last month.
President Trump has continued to assert, without evidence, that he won the 2020 election, including in Georgia, which was won by Joe Biden. The Fulton County clerk’s office declined to comment on the ongoing litigation, stating that it is not at liberty to discuss pending legal matters.
