Red baseball caps reading “Make America Go Away,” designed to parody President Donald Trump’s signature “Make America Great Again” slogan, have started appearing widely on social media and at demonstrations opposing the U.S. president’s plans to acquire Greenland, reports Baltimore Chronicle via Fox 29. The hats, created by Copenhagen vintage store owner Jesper Rabe Tonnesen, have become a symbol of public resistance and support for Greenland amid growing debate over Trump’s interest in the Arctic territory.
Tonnesen said the idea came after realizing the potential seriousness of Trump’s intentions. “When a delegation from America went up to Greenland, we started to realize this probably wasn’t a joke — it’s not reality TV, it’s actually reality,” he explained. He added that his goal was to communicate humorously while uniting the Danish public in solidarity with Greenland. An initial version of the hat included the phrase “Nu det NUUK!”—a wordplay on the Danish expression “Nu det nok,” meaning “Now it’s enough,” substituting Nuuk, Greenland’s capital.
The caps sold out quickly after being released, reflecting widespread interest and opposition. They have become a notable emblem during protests in Denmark and beyond, coinciding with the growing online circulation of images featuring the hats.
President Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to gain control of Greenland, first during his initial term and now renewed during recent public statements. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump affirmed that he seeks negotiations to acquire the territory. On Truth Social, he posted a video of a Greenland resident reportedly asking the U.S. to purchase the island and claimed the people of Greenland are “MAGA.” He has emphasized that the U.S. must have control over Greenland, labeling any alternative “unacceptable.”
Greenland, a semiautonomous territory of Denmark and home to a significant U.S. military presence, holds strategic importance above the Arctic Circle. The island contains large deposits of rare earth minerals, uranium, oil reserves, and natural gas. Experts also point to Greenland’s environmental significance, noting that ice melt will affect global sea levels, making the territory increasingly central to international security and trade discussions in the 21st century.
