Clintons agree to closed-door depositions in House Oversight Epstein probe after six months of legal standoff, with terms still under review by Rep. Comer.

Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have consented to participate in closed-door depositions with the House Oversight Committee regarding its ongoing investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, Baltimore Chronicle, reports. This development comes after six months of legal resistance and congressional pressure, during which the Clintons had repeatedly challenged the legitimacy of the subpoenas issued against them, citing legal concerns, with House Republicans considering contempt resolutions, with a vote initially anticipated as early as Wednesday.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer stated Monday that he is reviewing the Clintons’ agreement to determine the exact parameters of their depositions, noting that, although terms have been proposed, there remains a lack of clarity and no scheduled dates for the interviews. “The Clintons’ counsel has indicated agreement, but these terms are still undefined, and we need precise details before proceeding,” Comer said. “I will clarify these terms and then confer with committee members on the next steps.”

For months, the Clintons had declined to comply with the subpoenas, asserting they were without legal basis. Comer, a Republican, emphasized that no individual, regardless of former office, is exempt from congressional authority, insisting that compliance is mandatory. Both Bill and Hillary Clinton deny any wrongdoing or knowledge of Epstein’s criminal activities, and no victim or associate has publicly accused them of inappropriate conduct linked to Epstein.

On January 31, the Clintons’ legal teams submitted a letter proposing a framework for a four-hour transcribed interview in New York City, open to all committee members, as an alternative to formal sworn depositions. The letter requested that the scope of questions be strictly confined to matters related to Epstein’s investigations and prosecutions, and it included a provision for the former president to designate a transcriber alongside the House-appointed court reporter. Attorneys Katherine Turner and Ashley Callen stressed that this approach was designed to avoid additional legal proceedings while allowing their clients to provide testimony beyond previously submitted sworn statements.

Comer expressed concerns regarding the proposed terms, including the restricted scope and the four-hour limit, which he argued could prevent the committee from fully exploring President Clinton’s personal relationship with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. He also objected to breaking questioning into 30-minute alternating blocks between Republicans and Democrats, warning that time constraints might incentivize evasive or lengthy off-topic answers.

The proposal for a transcribed interview rather than a sworn deposition also drew criticism, as Comer highlighted that a voluntary interview would allow the witness to decline answering questions without consequence, potentially forcing the committee to reissue subpoenas and restart the process. Regarding Hillary Clinton, her lawyers reiterated that she had no involvement with Department of Justice handling of the investigations either during her tenure or as a private citizen after leaving office in 2013, requesting the withdrawal of the subpoena and contempt resolution to continue negotiations in good faith.

Comer maintained the necessity of in-person testimony, rejecting the sufficiency of written or sworn statements alone. He described any attempts to seek preferential treatment for the Clintons as “both frustrating and an affront to the American people’s desire for transparency.”
