The U.S. Postal Service will suspend all mail and delivery operations and close post offices on Presidents Day, Monday, February 16, Baltimore Chronicle with reference to the official USPS. Originally established to honor the birthday of the first U.S. President George Washington, the holiday has evolved into a broader recognition of the U.S. presidency.
Mail delivery will not occur on Presidents Day. Since the USPS does not operate on Sundays, this results in two consecutive days without mail service. Normal operations for the U.S. Postal Service and most government offices will resume on Tuesday, February 17.
Presidents Day in 2026 falls on Monday, February 16. Federal, state, and local government offices will be closed, including Secretaries of State, county clerk offices, and courts. Banks, including all Federal Reserve branches, will also be closed, though ATMs will remain accessible for transactions.
Schools and universities typically cancel classes on Presidents Day, although some may use the day to make up for previous closures. The holiday honors the birthdays of George Washington (February 22) and Abraham Lincoln (February 12). Since 1971, it has officially been observed on the third Monday of February, recognizing both presidents. Although formally called Washington’s Birthday, the day is widely referred to as Presidents Day.
