Canada joins Eurovision 2027 for its first official appearance, becoming the contest’s first new participant since Australia debuted in 2015.

Canada will officially compete at Eurovision 2027, becoming the contest’s first new participant since Australia joined in 2015. The debut follows CBC/Radio-Canada’s admission as a full European Broadcasting Union member, as the Baltimore Chronicle editorial team notes via Instagram.

The 71st Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Bulgaria. The host city, exact dates and venue have not yet been officially announced.

Why Canada can enter Eurovision 2027

CBC/Radio-Canada received full EBU membership after a vote at the organisation’s General Assembly on June 25, 2026. That status allows the Canadian public broadcaster to submit a national entry.

Marie-Philippe Bouchard, president and CEO of CBC/Radio-Canada, called the contest a major platform for Canadian performers. The broadcaster has not yet revealed how its singer and song will be selected.

The confirmed details currently include:

  • Canada will debut at Eurovision in 2027.
  • CBC/Radio-Canada will manage the national participation.
  • The competition will be staged in Bulgaria.
  • Canada is the first newcomer since Australia in 2015.
  • The selection process will be announced later in 2026.

Canada will probably compete in a semifinal before reaching the Grand Final. Further rules will follow when the EBU publishes the complete participant list.

Canada’s existing connection with Eurovision

Canadian artists have appeared at Eurovision before, although they represented European countries. The most famous example remains Céline Dion.

The Quebec-born singer represented Switzerland in 1988 with “Ne partez pas sans moi.” She won the contest by only 1 point.

The 2027 appearance will therefore mark a clear change. For the first time, a Canadian performer will represent Canada itself on the Eurovision stage.

What happens next for Canada at Eurovision

CBC/Radio-Canada must now decide how to select its first representative. Possible options include an open national final or an internal broadcaster selection.

The artist, song and selection schedule remain unconfirmed. Bulgaria must also complete its host-city process before the venue can be announced.
