The price increase has hit a record high.
One of the most expensive spices in the world, saffron, is now worth even more.

Thus, in Iran, the price of seasoning jumped to $1,400 per kilogram. This is twice as much as last year. But abroad you will have to pay $1,800 for a kilo of saffron.
The reason is changing weather conditions and lack of water in Iran. This led to a sharp drop in yield and, as a consequence, a record rise in price. The head of the Torbete-Jam saffron exchange, Mojtabhi Payam-Asgari, explained that due to the frosty winter, dry spring and hot summer with temperatures up to 50 degrees, all water sources have dried up.

Total saffron production is expected to fall from almost 400 tonnes to around 170 tonnes.
Also, the high cost of saffron is due to the difficult harvesting process: to produce a kilogram of the spice, about 170 thousand flowers are required, collected at dawn in October and November.
