Georgia Tech has officially appointed Scott Cross, the former head coach of Troy University, as the new leader of its men’s basketball program, reports Baltimore Chronicle via ESPN. Cross has signed a five-year contract to take over a struggling program and bring his extensive experience in Division I basketball to the Atlanta-based school.

Cross has a distinguished record in college basketball, with 350 career Division I wins across 19 seasons as head coach at both UT Arlington and Troy. At Troy, he led the team to consecutive NCAA men’s basketball tournament appearances and back-to-back Sun Belt regular-season championships, highlighting his ability to build competitive programs.

He replaces Damon Stoudamire, who was relieved of his duties after three seasons in which Georgia Tech failed to qualify for the NCAA tournament. Cross brings to Tech a strong postseason background, including three NCAA tournament appearances, and a record of 225-161 at UT Arlington between 2006 and 2018. His departure from UT Arlington following three consecutive 20-win seasons is widely regarded as a significant administrative misstep, as the program struggled with multiple coaching changes thereafter.

Georgia Tech has faced challenges in recent years, reaching just one NCAA tournament since 2010 under Josh Pastner. Previous coaches Brian Gregory and Damon Stoudamire were unable to restore consistent success. The program ended the 2025–26 season at the bottom of the ACC standings, finishing 2-16 in conference play and 11-20 overall, including a 12-game losing streak.

Cross inherits a program that, under first-year athletic director Ryan Alpert, is committed to rebuilding and competing effectively in the ACC. Troy University concluded its season with a 22-12 overall record and a 12-6 conference record, including wins over nonconference opponents San Diego State and Furman. Throughout the hiring process, Georgia Tech officials emphasized their intention to support the basketball program with competitive resources to strengthen its ACC presence.
