US President Donald Trump may leave Russia and Ukraine to arrange a meeting between their leaders without direct involvement, reports Baltimore Chronicle, citing The Guardian.
According to sources, Trump continues to believe that the key to ending the war in Ukraine lies in a bilateral meeting between the presidents of Russia and Ukraine. He believes that this should be the next crucial step.
The sources also report that the US leader does not plan to be directly involved in the negotiations and wants the meeting between Putin and Zelensky to take place without him. Trump informed his advisors that he would hold a trilateral meeting only after the Russian and Ukrainian leaders meet with each other. However, it remains unclear whether this first meeting will take place, and the White House has not named specific locations for the summit.
In a phone interview with host Mark Levin on WABC radio, Trump emphasized that it would be better for Putin and Zelensky to meet first without his involvement. At the same time, the situation remains in a “wait-and-see position,” according to a senior White House official. No significant progress has been made on organizing the meeting in recent days, and the summit is still uncertain. Trump, who previously claimed he could end the war in 24 hours, acknowledged that the situation in Ukraine is much more complicated than he had anticipated.
