Zohran Mamdani wins New York City’s mayoral election, becoming the first Muslim to hold the office and achieving the city’s highest vote count in decades.

Zohran Mamdani has secured a decisive victory in the New York City mayoral race, defeating independent candidate Andrew Cuomo. According to projections released by the Associated Press, Mamdani, who identifies as a democratic socialist, will become the city’s first Muslim mayor, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to the Associated Press.

Mamdani captured the attention of progressive voters through his ambitious social platform, which includes free childcare, free public bus transport, and a rent freeze affecting roughly one million New Yorkers living in rent-regulated apartments.

His victory comes amid broader Democratic successes across the United States. Democratic candidates also triumphed in key gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia. Meanwhile, voters in California approved new congressional district maps that could potentially flip up to five Republican-held seats to Democratic control during the 2026 midterm elections.

According to the city’s election records, with 91 percent of ballots counted, Mamdani had received more than one million votes, compared with approximately 850,000 for Cuomo. Mamdani’s total of 1,036,051 votes marks the highest tally for any New York City mayoral candidate since 1965, when Republican John Lindsay won 1,149,106 votes.

Historical data further shows that Democrat Robert F. Wagner Jr. still holds the record for the most votes ever cast for a New York City mayoral candidate — more than 1.5 million in 1957 and over 1.2 million in 1961, both times winning re-election with a strong lead.
