Federal employees will receive two additional days off on Dec. 24 and Dec. 26 by Trump’s executive order, with exceptions for essential duties.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order granting most federal employees two additional days off next week, on December 24 and December 26, in addition to the standard Christmas Day holiday on December 25, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to official statements. Some federal agencies and offices, however, may remain open, and certain employees will still be required to report for duty due to “national security, defense, or other public need.”

While there is no guarantee that presidents will grant extra time off around Christmas, many have historically done so. Former President Joe Biden gave federal employees Christmas Eve off in 2024. During Trump’s first term, he granted an extra day off for Christmas Eve in 2020, 2019, and 2018.

This year marks the first recent instance in which federal employees are receiving two additional days off for the holiday season. Previously, in 2014, former President Barack Obama gave employees the day off on Friday, December 26, and in 2012, on Monday, December 24. Former President George W. Bush granted federal employees December 24 off in both 2007 and 2001.
