U.S. President Donald Trump met with Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado on Thursday at the White House, where she personally presented him with her Nobel Peace Prize medal, reports Baltimore Chronicle via io.com.ua. During the meeting in the Oval Office, Trump described the event as a “wonderful gesture of mutual respect” and praised Machado as “a wonderful woman who has been through so much,” highlighting the significance of their meeting in Washington, D.C.

Following the ceremony, Trump shared on his social media platform that Machado had given him her Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of the work he has done. A White House official later confirmed to ABC News that the president formally accepted the medal. Details regarding the discussions in the closed-door meeting have not been publicly disclosed, though Trump described the encounter as “great” when speaking to reporters.

Machado, speaking to journalists as she departed the White House, emphasized the historical symbolism behind the medal. She recounted that 200 years ago, General Lafayette awarded Simon Bolivar a medal bearing George Washington’s image, which Bolivar preserved throughout his life. Machado explained that this historical gesture represented the enduring friendship and shared struggle for freedom between the United States and Venezuela. By presenting Trump with her Nobel Peace Prize, she framed it as a continuation of this legacy and a recognition of his support for Venezuelan efforts to secure liberty from oppressive regimes.

The event marks a notable moment in U.S.-Venezuelan relations, bringing together a former U.S. president and a prominent opposition figure to acknowledge shared democratic principles and historical ties between the nations.
