Ian Roberts was sentenced to 2 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to federal charges tied to unlawful firearm possession and a false citizenship claim. The former Des Moines Public Schools superintendent received 8 months of credit for time already served, Baltimore Chronicle reports.

Roberts, a Guyana native, led Iowa’s largest school district for more than 2 years. He was arrested by ICE agents in September 2025 during an immigration operation.

Why Roberts was sentenced

Federal prosecutors said Roberts had not been authorized to work in the U.S. since December 2020. During his detention, officers found a loaded handgun in his vehicle. Three more firearms were later found at his home.

He pleaded guilty to 2 charges: unlawful firearm possession and making a false statement on an employment verification form. Prosecutors argued that his conduct showed a long pattern of violating immigration and employment rules.

Key details in the case

Before sentencing, the government asked for 37 months in prison. Roberts’ attorneys requested probation, saying he accepted responsibility and would face deportation after his sentence.

The case included several central facts:

  • Roberts worked as superintendent from July 2023.
  • He was arrested by ICE in September 2025.
  • Federal officials said his student visa expired in 2004.
  • A final removal order was issued in 2024.
  • His attorney said they do not plan to appeal.

The court did not accept the defense request for probation.
