Kennedy Center must remove Donald Trump’s name from its title, facade and official materials within 14 days after a federal judge ruled that the Washington venue cannot be renamed without Congress. The order also blocks a planned temporary closure for renovations, Baltimore Chronicle.
Why the judge blocked the renaming
District Judge Christopher Cooper said the center’s legal statute is clear: it remains the John F Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts. In his ruling, he wrote that only Congress can change the institution’s formal name.
Trump had backed the new title, The Donald J Trump and John F Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts. His name was added to signage after the board approved the change.
What happens next
The Kennedy Center said it will appeal. A spokesperson argued the board wanted to recognize Trump’s role in securing $257 million for restoration.
The ruling affects:
- the official title
- facade lettering
- digital signage
- public materials
- renovation closure plans
The center says major restoration is still needed. The court, however, ruled that legal authority matters more than board preference.

Political fight around the Kennedy Center
The case was brought by Democratic congresswoman Joyce Beatty and other former trustees. They argued that Trump’s changes went beyond lawful board powers.
Trump responded on Truth Social that he may work with Congress to return control of the “failing institution” to them. The dispute now moves toward appeal.
| Key issue | Court decision |
|---|---|
| Trump name on center | Must be removed |
| Deadline | 14 days |
| Venue closure | Blocked |
| Next step | Appeal expected |
The ruling turns a cultural venue into a legal and political test over power, memory and public institutions.
