United States President Donald Trump expressed confidence that he will be able to resolve the long-running military conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan “very quickly.” He made this announcement on October 26 on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit for Southeast Asian nations. “I hear Pakistan and Afghanistan have started talking. But I will solve this issue very quickly,” Trump proclaimed, reports Baltimore Chronicle with a link to Assosiated Press.
Tensions have persisted between the two countries for a long time, as Islamabad believes that Afghanistan allows terrorist groups to use its territory as a base for attacks on Pakistan. The escalation of the conflict increased significantly earlier this month when Pakistan once again called for an end to providing sanctuary to terrorists, while Afghanistan, in turn, accused its neighbor of violating its airspace and conducting shelling. Following this incident, “Taliban” forces attacked Pakistani border guards in at least three border provinces. On October 19, a Pakistani delegation met with representatives of the Afghan “Taliban” group in Doha, the capital of Qatar, where they managed to conclude a ceasefire agreement. As AP notes, a second round of negotiations began in Istanbul on October 25, focusing on transforming the “fragile truce into a solid foundation for peace and border security.”
