Hungary has vetoed the final conclusions of the EU Energy Council, which included a call to continue work on banning imports of gas and oil from the Russian Federation, reports Baltimore Chronicle, citing the statement of Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó.
Szijjártó made the announcement on Monday, June 16, through his official account on the social media platform X. He confirmed that Hungary had blocked the adoption of the Council’s conclusions, which would have tasked the European Commission with advancing a plan to phase out Russian energy supplies.
The Hungarian foreign minister emphasized that energy policy falls within the scope of national competence and, therefore, Brussels should not interfere in such matters. According to Szijjártó, the proposed plan poses a threat to Hungary’s national sovereignty and its energy security.
He also noted the current escalation in the Middle East and underlined that, given the global situation, Hungary had proposed not to bring such a plan forward for discussion at all.
