Federal authorities have taken a Virginia man into custody in connection with the placement of two pipe bombs outside the Republican National Committee and Democratic National Committee headquarters on the night preceding the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, reports Baltimore Chronicle. The suspect is expected to face federal charges related to the devices, which investigators later confirmed were capable of causing serious injury or death if detonated. This arrest represents a significant breakthrough in one of the most closely scrutinized federal investigations in recent American history.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the full extent of the evidence linking the suspect to the bombs. Following the initial discovery, the FBI released photos and offered a substantial reward for information leading to the identification, apprehension, and conviction of the individual or individuals responsible.
The devices were found in Washington, D.C., on the afternoon of January 6, 2021, approximately sixteen hours after being placed. Surveillance footage showed a person in a gray-hooded sweatshirt, wearing a mask and Nike Air Max Speed Turf sneakers with a yellow logo, depositing the bombs. Investigators noted a distinct gait observed in the footage, which became a key element of the investigation.
The pipe bombs were discovered shortly before supporters of then-President Donald Trump breached barricades outside the Capitol, where lawmakers were in session to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election. Despite extensive efforts over the years, investigators struggled to identify the suspect, issuing repeated public appeals for tips.
Even four years after the incident, the FBI had not definitively confirmed the suspect’s gender, despite conducting over 1,000 interviews, reviewing more than 39,000 video files, and investigating over 600 public tips. The FBI offered a reward of $500,000 for information leading to the suspect’s identification and arrest.
The lack of conclusive answers contributed to widespread speculation and conspiracy theories about the suspect’s potential political motivations or foreknowledge of the Capitol attack. In November 2024, Dan Bongino, deputy FBI director, suggested on The Dan Bongino Show that the pipe bombs may have been part of a deliberate setup.
One of the bombs placed outside the DNC headquarters was located within approximately twenty feet of then-Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris, according to a report from the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general. Harris entered the building in an armored vehicle and remained inside for roughly one hour and forty minutes before the device was discovered and her motorcade evacuated. The pipe bomb was positioned about nine feet from the exterior wall of the building.
A House committee report released earlier this year shed new light on the FBI’s handling of the investigation and highlighted multiple law enforcement failures to detect and secure the explosive devices at the scenes.
