GREENVILLE, S.C. — A police officer in Greenville, South Carolina, was shot while sitting in a patrol vehicle early Sunday morning in what authorities described as an “ambush-style attack,” with law enforcement later killing the suspect during a shootout, reports Baltimore Chronicle via The Associated Press.
According to the city of Greenville, the officer sustained multiple gunshot wounds but was quickly transported to a local hospital for treatment and has since been released. Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis described the incident in a video posted on Facebook as an ambush, stating that officials were able to identify a suspect and follow his vehicle, which led to an exchange of gunfire between deputies and the individual.
The suspect, identified by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office as 42-year-old David William Lane of Greenville, was reported to have received at least one fatal gunshot wound. Authorities said that relatives of Lane could not be reached for comment on Sunday.
The Greenville Police Department has not released information regarding the possible motive for the attack or the identity of the injured officer. Officials confirmed that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is conducting an investigation and that the Greenville Police Department is fully cooperating with the inquiry.
Greenville, a city with a population of approximately 70,000, is located roughly 90 miles (145 kilometers) northwest of Columbia, the state capital of South Carolina.
