U.S. President Donald Trump is increasingly skeptical about the prospects of a swift end to the war in Ukraine and the possibility of a personal meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to NBC News.
Two senior White House officials noted that while Trump has not abandoned efforts to halt the fighting, he sees the actual chances of reaching a peace agreement as minimal. According to them, the U.S. president acknowledged that the situation is far more complex than he had previously anticipated.
NBC News reports that the intense diplomatic efforts made over the past month have now effectively reached a deadlock. One European source expressed frustration that the Trump administration has not implemented new significant sanctions against Russia, which could have provided a push toward ending the war.
At the same time, another source emphasized that one of the main factors restraining sanctions is the personal relationship between the U.S. president and Vladimir Putin. According to sources, Trump told his advisors that he has no intention of worsening these ties. During his first term, he publicly stressed that it is in America’s interest to maintain a cooperative relationship with the leader of a nuclear-armed country.
