The EU plans to restrict oil imports via the "Druzhba" pipeline, affecting Hungary and Slovakia and potentially stopping Russian oil deliveries entirely.

The European Union is considering imposing restrictions on oil imports through the “Druzhba” pipeline, which supplies Hungary and Slovakia, reports Baltimore Chronicle with a link to Bloomberg.

Sources told the agency that Brussels is exploring options to partially or fully block deliveries via the “Druzhba” pipeline. Such measures could significantly reduce import volumes or even halt them entirely.

Budapest and Bratislava, which have consistently opposed initiatives to reduce dependence on Russian energy, are unlikely to influence this decision. The planned measures are separate from the 19th EU sanctions package and do not require unanimous approval.

Unlike sanctions, which need the consensus of all EU members, trade restrictions can be implemented at the national level. Therefore, the positions of Slovakia and Hungary will not be decisive.

Blocking oil supplies through the “Druzhba” pipeline, combined with the new sanctions, will allow the EU to advance a key demand of U.S. President Donald Trump — reducing reliance on Russian energy resources. Currently, Hungary and Slovakia remain the only EU countries still importing pipeline oil.
