Key Bridge collapse litigation was paused Monday, just before the civil trial was expected to begin. Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Grace Ocean Private Limited and Synergy Marine Private Limited agreed to delay the case, as noted by Baltimore Chronicle.

Why the trial was delayed

The dispute now centers on the remaining economic loss claims. Lawyers for the Dali owner and operator argue those claims should be dismissed. They cite a U.S. Supreme Court precedent limiting recovery for negligence-related economic losses without physical property damage.

City, county and private claimants took a different position. They argued the civil case should wait until the criminal case linked to the collision is completed.

What remains in the case

Several major claims have already been resolved. Personal injury, wrongful death and property damage claims were settled before trial.

The remaining dispute includes:

  • 11 economic loss claims
  • claims from Baltimore City
  • claims from Baltimore County
  • private economic loss claims
  • arguments over maritime liability

The delay keeps the case open, but it changes the timeline. It also gives both sides more time before the court addresses dismissal arguments.
