On Friday, October 10, the Nobel Committee announced the recipient of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. This year, the award went to Venezuelan opposition politician and leader of democratic forces, María Corina Machado, who has long advocated for her people’s rights and worked tirelessly for the restoration of democracy in Venezuela, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to the statement from the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

In an official statement released in Oslo, the committee emphasized that Machado was recognized for her “relentless efforts to promote democratic rights in Venezuela and her work toward achieving a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”

The Nobel Peace Prize traditionally concludes the series of annual Nobel awards and is widely regarded as the most political, often reflecting current global conflicts and the struggle for human rights.

Last year, the laureate was the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo, which unites victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They were honored “for decades of work toward a world without nuclear weapons and for bearing witness to the humanitarian consequences of the atomic bombings.”

This year’s laureate will receive the traditional medal, diploma, and a monetary award of approximately 11 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to over $950,000 USD. The award ceremony will take place on December 10 in Oslo, commemorating the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, the founder of the prize.
