New York Giants senior vice president of football operations and strategy Kevin Abrams is departing the organization after 27 years, sources confirmed, reports Baltimore Chronicle via ESPN. Abrams, who served as assistant general manager for 20 of those years and acted as interim GM during the 2017 season, worked under four general managers and contributed to two Super Bowl-winning front offices. His departure comes just a day after new head coach John Harbaugh was formally introduced, signaling a broader restructuring within the Giants organization.
On the second day of his tenure, Harbaugh met with multiple assistant coaches and informed most of the defensive staff that they would not return for the upcoming season. Among those affected is special teams coordinator Michael Ghorbial, who joined the Giants prior to the 2024 season from the New York Jets. Defensive line coach Andre Patterson, who coached while recovering from a 2025 prostate cancer diagnosis and was highly regarded by players, will also not return.
The Giants’ medical and athletic training departments are expected to undergo changes as well. Head athletic trainer Ronnie Barnes, who has held the position since 1980, will remain with the team but in a revised role. Additional staff, likely with ties to Harbaugh’s previous tenure in Baltimore, are expected to join.
Harbaugh’s authority within the Giants organization is unusual for the NFL, as he reports directly to ownership rather than to general manager Joe Schoen. This mirrors his prior arrangement with the Baltimore Ravens. Traditionally, the head coach reports to the general manager, who then reports to ownership.
Abrams’ long tenure included negotiating player contracts and managing salary cap responsibilities, which he handled since his early years with the team. The Giants’ recent organizational moves reflect a typical shift accompanying a new head coach, with Harbaugh reportedly planning to bring several staff members from Baltimore. “I would say there’s a number of guys that I have a pretty good idea they’re coming with me. But you can’t know that until it’s done,” Harbaugh stated during his introductory press conference.
