Ukraine is currently awaiting White House authorization for a comprehensive drone production deal proposed by Kyiv last year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Thursday, amid global efforts to strengthen air defense systems after the Iran conflict highlighted vulnerabilities, Baltimore Chronicle reports, with reference to ABC. The agreement under discussion would encompass multiple drone models and integrated air defense systems capable of defending against large-scale swarms of hundreds or even thousands of Iranian-designed Shahed drones and missiles, Zelenskyy noted in a statement shared via social media. “We have not yet had the opportunity to sign this document,” he added.

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion over four years ago, Moscow has deployed tens of thousands of Iranian-made Shahed drones against Ukraine, including its largest single-night barrage of more than 800 drones and decoys. Iran, in response to joint U.S.-Israeli operations, has employed the same drone models in strikes across the Middle East. In reaction, Ukraine has pioneered cost-effective counter-drone technologies, some priced at just a few thousand dollars, that have significantly altered conventional air defense strategies.

Zelenskyy indicated that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East could accelerate U.S. approval of the drone production deal. Securing such agreements would not only bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities but also strengthen its diplomatic leverage in negotiations with Moscow. Talks mediated by the United States aimed at ending Europe’s largest conflict since World War II remain paused due to the developments in Iran.

The Ukrainian president arrived in Romania, a NATO member state, on Thursday ahead of a planned meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. This visit coincides with new research revealing that Russian oil revenues, which fund Moscow’s war efforts, have increased since the Iran conflict began. The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air reported that daily oil income has risen on average by 14% compared to February, a critical boost for Russia’s ongoing military operations.

Macron’s office stated that discussions with Zelenskyy will address strategies to counteract Russia’s so-called shadow fleet of oil tankers, which continue to transport oil in violation of international sanctions and are difficult to intercept. During his visit to Bucharest, Zelenskyy was scheduled to meet Romanian President Nicușor Dan and Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, and tour a training center dedicated to Ukraine’s F-16 pilots. Romania has served as a key transit point for Ukrainian grain exports during the conflict and has provided energy support as Russian forces target Ukraine’s power infrastructure.
