The United States has unveiled the first prototypes of next-generation unmanned fighter jets—YFQ-42A by General Atomics and YFQ-44A by Anduril. These aircraft are developed under the Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program and are designed to operate alongside manned planes like the F-35 as well as to perform autonomous combat missions, reports the Baltimore Chronicle, citing general David Allvin.

The YFQ-42A, based on the experimental drone XQ-67A, is powered by a single engine and features an internal weapons bay. The YFQ-44A, also known as Fury, has a modular design allowing rapid adaptation for various combat roles. Both aircraft received their official designations during the 2025 Air & Space Forces Association symposium.

According to U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff General David Allvin, the initial test flights of these drones are planned for summer 2025. He emphasized their critical role in maintaining air superiority in future conflicts.

The CCA program aims to build a fleet of over 1,000 unmanned fighters by 2028. These drones are intended as a cost-effective alternative to manned aircraft, reducing risks to pilots and lowering operational expenses.

YFQ-42A and YFQ-44A are key elements in the U.S. Air Force’s strategy to integrate autonomous systems into combat aviation, enhancing responsiveness to modern threats and preserving technological dominance.
