San Francisco Supervisor Isabella Alcaraz resigns a week after appointment amid a scandal over unsanitary conditions at her former pet store, Animal Connection.

San Francisco Supervisor Isabella Alcaraz has agreed to resign just a week after being sworn in following allegations concerning her past as the owner of a pet store in the Sunset District, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to the SFGATE. Mayor Daniel Lurie stated that he discussed the matter with Alcaraz and agreed that the new information about her conduct while running her small business could significantly distract from her duties as supervisor. Alcaraz confirmed her intention to step down.

Her appointment faced criticism after reports emerged about the condition of her former pet store, Animal Connection, on Irving Street. Julia Baran, who later took over the business, described the store as having a “smell of death” due to unsanitary conditions. She told the San Francisco Standard that she found hundreds of dead mice, cages covered in rodent urine, piles of trash, and a freezer filled with deceased pets.

Alcaraz first met Lurie at a night market in the Sunset following the recall of Joel Engardio in September. She introduced herself and explained why she would be a suitable choice for supervisor. Lurie highlighted that her local roots and experience as a small-business owner were key factors in her appointment.

The mayor added that his hopes for the Sunset District remain unchanged, emphasizing that residents deserve a supervisor fully dedicated to representing their community, advocating for families, and bringing people together. Lurie’s team has already begun the process of finding a replacement.
