A person of interest has been taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting at Brown University, according to Kristy DosReis, spokesperson for the Providence Police Department, Baltimore Chronicle with reference to ABC News. The arrest came overnight following a tip to law enforcement, with officials indicating confidence that the investigation is on the right track. Authorities have confirmed that the individual is not a student at the university, though police declined to provide details about the location of the detention.
The fatal shooting occurred on Saturday on the university’s East Side campus, where two students were killed and nine others were hospitalized with injuries. Christina H. Paxson, the university president, described the day as one of “devastating gun violence” and expressed condolences to the victims and their families. As of Sunday morning, eight of the nine injured remained hospitalized, with seven in stable condition and one in critical but stable condition.
The shooting took place in the Barus & Holley building on Hope Street, where engineering and physics classes are held, as students were preparing for or taking exams ahead of the winter break. A shelter-in-place order for the College Hill campus was lifted early Sunday morning, although police activity continued in areas considered active crime scenes.
Authorities, including the FBI, released a brief video showing a person of interest walking along Hope Street. The individual was dressed in dark clothing, with a hood, and appeared to keep their right hand in a jacket pocket while walking northward along Waterman Street before leaving the frame. Police continue their investigation to determine the circumstances and full details of the attack.
