Julian Jones wins Democratic nomination for Baltimore County Executive after maintaining a decisive lead in the June 23 primary. The Baltimore County councilman defeated 4 rivals and secured his party’s place in the November election, as the Baltimore Chronicle editorial team reports.
Jones Secures More Than 30,000 Votes
Jones received 30,490 votes, representing 38.37% of the Democratic total. His nearest challenger, Councilman Izzy Patoka, finished with 23,575 votes and 29.67%.
Patoka gained ground during the mail-in ballot count. However, the remaining votes could not erase Jones’s advantage. Patoka conceded the race on June 27.
The final Democratic results were:
| Candidate | Votes | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Julian Jones | 30,490 | 38.37% |
| Izzy Patoka | 23,575 | 29.67% |
| Nick Stewart | 14,654 | 18.44% |
| Pat Young | 7,411 | 9.33% |
| Mansoor Shams | 3,337 | 4.20% |
Jones led in early voting and on Election Day. Patoka won more mail-in votes but remained 6,915 votes behind overall.

What Comes Next in the Baltimore County Executive Race
Jones will face Republican nominee Patrick V. Dyer in the November 3 general election. Dyer won the Republican primary with 16,920 votes, or 64.97%.
The campaign will now focus on several major county issues:
- housing affordability and development;
- public school funding;
- transportation and infrastructure;
- public safety and government accountability.
Jones currently represents Baltimore County Council District 4. A general election victory could make him the first Black county executive in Baltimore County history.
The next county executive will replace Kathy Klausmeier. She was appointed after Johnny Olszewski entered Congress and is not seeking a full term.
