Egypt has temporarily reduced the supply of natural gas to certain industrial sectors due to a drop in imports from Israel. The decline follows the shutdown of two major Israeli gas fields, including the country’s largest — Leviathan — amid rising regional tensions triggered by military exchanges between Israel and Iran, reports the Baltimore Chronicle with reference to Bloomberg.

In response to the threat of another power supply crisis — similar to previous years when electricity shortages led to widespread blackouts — Egyptian authorities have taken urgent measures. Some power plants have been switched to diesel fuel, and the government has accelerated imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

New LNG supply contracts have already been signed, but deliveries are only expected to begin next month. Until then, the country’s energy system remains vulnerable to possible electricity shortages during peak summer demand.
