Millions of Amazon Prime subscribers are set to receive automatic refunds following a $2.5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over allegations that the company misled customers, reports Baltimore Chronicle. The agreement resolves a complaint filed in 2023 accusing Amazon of enrolling consumers in Prime without clear consent and making it excessively difficult to cancel subscriptions.
The settlement covers Prime members who joined the service between June 2019 and June 2025 and did not utilize the benefits more than three times in a single year. Amazon did not admit to any wrongdoing but stated, “Amazon and our executives have always followed the law, and this settlement allows us to move forward and focus on innovating for customers.”
Eligible customers will automatically receive refund notifications via email. Payments can be issued through PayPal, Venmo, or as mailed checks, with a maximum refund amount of $51. Claims will officially open on December 24, 2025, and individuals who do not receive an automatic payment or notification may still qualify by submitting a claim online at https://www.subscriptionmembershipsettlement.com/.
The refunds stem from a significant enforcement action by the FTC targeting deceptive enrollment and cancellation practices that affected millions of Amazon users nationwide.
