Legendary and Bandai Namco bring Mobile Suit Gundam to life in a live-action film starring Sydney Sweeney and Jason Clarke, targeting Netflix distribution.

The upcoming live-action adaptation of Mobile Suit Gundam is assembling an intriguing cast with Jason Clarke set to star alongside Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo, reports Baltimore Chronicle via collider. Representatives from both Netflix and Legendary have declined to comment, though insiders suggest Netflix is being considered as the film’s distributor. Clarke’s character, like most plot details, remains undisclosed at this stage.

The project is a collaboration between Legendary Entertainment and Bandai Namco Filmworks, marking the first time the iconic franchise will be translated into live-action. Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino in 1979, Mobile Suit Gundam helped establish the mecha subgenre, intertwining giant robot battles, military strategy, and deeply human storytelling within a science-fiction framework. The franchise continues to be commercially robust, generating more than $600 million annually decades after its debut.

Jim Mickle, recognized for his work as the showrunner of Sweet Tooth, is directing the film. Mickle also penned the script and is producing alongside his partner Linda Moran under their Nightshade banner. Noah Centineo contributes as a producer with Enzo Marc. Development on the live-action project began in 2021, with Jordan Vogt-Roberts, known for Kong: Skull Island, previously attached to direct before departing the project.

Adapting Gundam for a live-action audience involves more than just replicating the giant robots; it requires capturing the franchise’s political intrigue, moral complexity, and personal drama alongside the visual spectacle of large-scale mechanized combat. Balancing the emotional narrative with high-octane action sequences presents a significant challenge for the creative team.

Outside of Gundam, Jason Clarke is collaborating again with his Zero Dark Thirty director Kathryn Bigelow on Netflix’s political thriller A House of Dynamite and recently portrayed Alex Murdaugh in Hulu’s limited series Murdaugh: Death in the Family. He also completed work on F.A.S.T., a forthcoming Warner Bros. action-thriller written by Taylor Sheridan, marking his first collaboration with the Yellowstone creator. Clarke’s other recent projects include leading roles in Apple TV+’s The Last Frontier and portraying Lakers coach Jerry West in HBO’s Winning Time: Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.
