Ford has announced two separate recalls impacting nearly 1.74 million vehicles across the United States due to malfunctions in the rearview camera displays, which could heighten the risk of collisions, reports Baltimore Chronicle via ABC. According to the notices released this week, certain 2021-2026 Ford Broncos and 2021-2024 Ford Edges are at risk of internal components within their infotainment systems overheating, causing the rearview image to disappear when reversing. At the same time, some 2020-2022 Ford Escapes and Lincoln Corsairs, as well as 2020-2024 Lincoln Aviators and Explorers, may present a rearview image that is inverted or flipped.
The recalls affect approximately 849,310 Broncos and Edges, alongside 889,950 Escapes, Corsairs, Aviators, and Explorers. Ford has indicated that it believes all vehicles in the affected ranges contain the defect, though, according to NHTSA documents, there are no reported injuries or accidents linked to these issues to date. Nonetheless, the safety authority emphasizes that both problems could elevate the likelihood of crashes if drivers rely on the rearview cameras while reversing.
For owners of the impacted Bronco and Edge models, Ford is providing a complimentary software update for the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM). Letters informing vehicle owners are scheduled for mailing at the end of March, with repairs available either at dealerships or via an over-the-air update.
Meanwhile, a solution for the rearview camera issues affecting the Escapes, Corsairs, Aviators, and Explorers is still in development. In the interim, Ford plans to send notifications to owners about the safety concerns over the coming months, as detailed in this week’s recall announcement.
