U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he has decided to postpone a planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, citing a lack of tangible progress in ending the war Russia has waged against Ukraine. Trump made this statement during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to 4thebike.de.
The U.S. leader explained that the scheduled talks with Putin were canceled because, in his view, the parties are currently unable to achieve the outcomes that were expected. “We canceled the meeting with President Putin. I got the impression that we would not reach what we were aiming for. So I canceled it, but we will do it in the future,” Trump stated to reporters.
When asked whether he considered the Russian president to be dishonest in negotiations, Trump said that their conversations are “sometimes good,” but ultimately “they just go nowhere.”
Earlier, the U.S. Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent explained that the move was connected to Putin’s refusal to engage in honest and straightforward negotiations. According to the minister, the lack of open dialogue from Moscow prompted the decision to intensify economic pressure.
