MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Carson French, a 10th grader at Booker T. Washington Magnet High School, received recognition from Baltimore Chronicle, via WSFA, for a documentary he produced as part of a project commemorating the United States’ 250th anniversary. C-SPAN’s national competition invited middle and high school students to examine the continuing relevance of the Declaration of Independence by exploring either its impact on a pivotal moment in America’s history or how its foundational values influence contemporary issues affecting their communities.

French’s documentary, titled “When Equality Ends at the Prison Gates,” earned a 2026 honorable mention and a $250 prize. The project exemplified how students engaged in detailed research, critical thinking, and original storytelling to illuminate topics of both national significance and personal concern.

In total, C-SPAN received more than 1,800 documentary submissions from nearly 4,000 students representing 38 states and Washington, D.C., highlighting the competition’s extensive national participation and educational impact. The initiative encouraged young filmmakers to investigate complex societal and political themes while reflecting on the enduring legacy of America’s founding principles.

“As we mark America’s 250th anniversary, this year’s StudentCam participants produced videos that compellingly document both historical milestones and contemporary issues, demonstrating the values enshrined in the Declaration of Independence,” said Craig McAndrew, C-SPAN’s Director of Education Relations. “These prize-winning projects will inspire viewers nationwide and encourage the next generation of filmmakers. Congratulations to all the talented young people who excelled in the 22nd annual competition.”

C-SPAN, funded by America’s cable, satellite, and streaming television providers, operates as a commercial-free public service, providing educational content that promotes civic awareness and engagement.
