The Netherlands has voiced opposition to accelerating Ukraine’s accession to the European Union and insisted that the principle of unanimity in decision-making must remain unchanged. According to The Hague, any amendments to the current rules require the consent of all EU member states, reports the Baltimore Chronicle with reference to DW.
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, following a meeting of European Union leaders in Copenhagen, said that his country would not endorse the initiative of European Council President António Costa. Costa had suggested speeding up Ukraine’s membership negotiations by replacing the unanimity rule with the mechanism of qualified majority voting.
Schoof stressed that abandoning consensus could undermine trust among member states, as the unanimity principle ensures that the interests of every country are considered when making strategic decisions for the EU. He emphasized that the Netherlands’ stance on preserving the existing framework remains firm and will not change.
