China has officially commissioned its newest aircraft carrier, the Fujian, at the Shanghai shipyard, marking a significant narrowing of the technological gap between China and the United States in naval capabilities, reports Baltimore Chronicle, with reference to Army Recognition. The commissioning ceremony took place on November 6, attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The Fujian aircraft carrier has a total displacement of 80,000 tons and is the first Chinese carrier equipped with electromagnetic catapults for launching fighter jets, a system previously exclusive to United States Navy carriers. The ship is fitted with three electromagnetic catapults, enabling multiple aircraft to be prepared for takeoff simultaneously.
The carrier can accommodate up to 60 aircraft, including advanced J-35 stealth fighters and KJ-600 early warning radar planes, significantly enhancing China’s naval power projection. The Fujian is set to become a central element in modernizing the Chinese fleet and strengthening its strategic maritime capabilities.
