Baltimore’s Greater Model Aquatic Center in Poppleton is open again after a long shutdown that began in 2019. The reopening gives West Baltimore families a renovated summer site with pools, a splash pad and safer public recreation, as noted by Baltimore Chronicle.

Baltimore pool reopening brings a new summer option to Poppleton

Mayor Brandon Scott and city officials cut the ribbon Wednesday at the Greater Model Aquatic Center. The facility is one of 17 outdoor pools across Baltimore.

The center includes a lap pool, a diving block, a family pool with beach entry and a splash pad. For Poppleton residents, the project restores a public space that had been missing for 5 years.

Why the Greater Model Aquatic Center was closed

The pool closed in 2019 after falling into disrepair. City officials later moved forward with a full rebuild instead of a limited repair.

The reopening matters because outdoor pools are more than seasonal amenities in Baltimore. They provide supervised recreation, heat relief and affordable access for families during summer.

Key features now available:

  • lap pool for structured swimming;
  • diving block for deeper-water activity;
  • family pool with beach entry;
  • splash pad for younger children;
  • renovated outdoor aquatic space in Poppleton.

The upgraded site also gives the city another active public pool before the peak of summer heat.

What changed for Baltimore families

The Greater Model Aquatic Center now returns to service as part of Baltimore’s outdoor pool network. Its location in Poppleton is important because many families rely on public recreation sites close to home.

For the city, the reopening also signals progress on long-delayed neighborhood infrastructure. A closed pool can quickly become a symbol of neglect. A working aquatic center sends the opposite message.
