BCPS new superintendent selection has entered its final stage after the Baltimore County Board of Education chose a preferred candidate. The name should be released Monday, June 22, following approval from Maryland State Superintendent Carey Wright, as the Baltimore Chronicle editorial team reports.
When Will BCPS Announce the New Superintendent?
The Board selected its candidate after final interviews with 4 finalists. Maryland approval is required before the appointment can proceed.
The announcement and appointment schedule is:
| Date | Expected Action |
|---|---|
| June 22 | Candidate’s name announced after state approval |
| June 24 | Board meets to appoint the superintendent |
| July 1 | New superintendent expected to take office |
The June 24 meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. An in-person appointment would complete the national search conducted with Ray and Associates LLC.
Who Were the BCPS Superintendent Finalists?
BCPS announced 4 finalists on June 12:
- Dr. William Heiser, Anne Arundel County Public Schools
- Dr. Penelope Martin-Knox, Raytown C-2 School District
- Dr. Edward Ryans, Prince George’s County Public Schools
- Dr. David Sovine, Washington County Public Schools
Each candidate participated in the district’s final selection process. Their professional backgrounds include school-system leadership, operations and secondary education administration.

Why Is BCPS Choosing a New Superintendent?
Current Superintendent Dr. Myriam Rogers will retire July 1 after leading BCPS for 3 years. Her education career spans 30 years, including work as a teacher and administrator.
The incoming superintendent will oversee a district serving about 108,000 students. The appointment will shape BCPS leadership as schools prepare for the 2026–2027 academic year.
