Steam Machine price starts at $1,049 for the 512GB model without a controller. The 2TB version costs $1,349, Baltimore Chronicle reports.
Valve’s compact gaming PC is therefore significantly more expensive than mainstream consoles. Earlier market estimates placed its possible price below $800.
Memory Shortages Push Valve’s Hardware Above Console Prices
Valve linked the higher cost to shortages affecting memory and storage components. The company does not subsidize hardware sales like major console manufacturers.
A standard PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X remains considerably cheaper. Even premium console buyers may question Valve’s price-to-performance balance.
Steam Machine Specifications
Valve positions the device as a small living-room PC rather than a closed console. Its main specifications include:
- AMD Zen 4 processor with 6 cores and 12 threads
- AMD RDNA 3 graphics with 28 compute units
- 16GB DDR5 memory and 8GB GDDR6 video memory
- 512GB or 2TB NVMe SSD storage
- microSD expansion, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3
- Gigabit Ethernet and SteamOS
Both versions use the same processor and graphics hardware. Storage capacity remains the principal difference between the models.
| Version | Storage | US Price | Controller |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base model | 512GB | $1,049 | Not included |
| Premium model | 2TB | $1,349 | Not included |
Valve opened a reservation queue before the first shipments. The initial batch is scheduled to leave warehouses on June 29.
SteamOS Targets Console Convenience With PC Flexibility
Steam Machine runs SteamOS, Valve’s Linux-based gaming platform. It supports compatible titles from a user’s existing Steam library.
Valve promotes performance near the PlayStation 5 class, depending on resolution and game optimization. The company also continues expanding SteamOS support beyond its own hardware.
Its cooperation with Nvidia could improve driver compatibility for future SteamOS computers. Users can already install the operating system on selected third-party PC configurations.
