NASA has initiated another practice launch countdown for its first crewed moon mission in decades after addressing dangerous liquid hydrogen fuel leaks that previously delayed the flight into March, Baltimore Chronicle reports, with reference to official NASA statements. The previous fueling attempt was stopped two weeks ago due to similar leaks, the same issue that disrupted the Artemis I uncrewed mission three years ago.

Teams at Kennedy Space Center replaced two faulty seals and cleared a clogged filter at the pad where the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket stands. The current two-day countdown rehearsal is set to culminate on Thursday with an attempt to fill the rocket’s fuel tanks. The four Artemis II astronauts will observe the critical operation remotely, ensuring all systems perform correctly before launch.

NASA requires a fully successful, leak-free fueling test before announcing the official flight date. The earliest potential launch for Artemis II is March 6, although officials had briefly considered an earlier date but determined that extra time was necessary to thoroughly analyze the fueling results.

This mission marks NASA’s first crewed lunar flight since 1972, when the Apollo program last sent astronauts to the moon, highlighting the significance of the Artemis II mission as the agency prepares to reestablish human presence beyond Earth orbit.
