On May 9, 2025, US President Donald Trump unveiled a new round of trade measures aimed at reshaping international economic relations. Among the key steps, he announced tariff reductions on British cars and metals, as well as a potential easing of duties on Chinese imports, reports the Baltimore Chronicle, citing The Guardian.

As part of a new agreement between the US and the UK, Washington will lift the 25% tariffs on British steel and aluminum and lower tariffs on most UK-exported vehicles from 27.5% to 10%. In return, the British government agreed to remove duties on American ethanol and open its market to US beef products.

Beneath the celebratory tone, however, there are questions about the actual economic benefits for the UK. While Trump frames the deal as a success of his economic strategy, a baseline 10% tariff on most British goods exported to the US remains in place.

Meanwhile, ahead of crucial trade talks in Switzerland, Trump has proposed cutting duties on Chinese goods from 145% to 80%, signaling a possible thaw in the ongoing trade war. Senior US officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jameson Greer, are expected to meet with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng — the first substantial negotiations between the two nations in months.

These mutual tariffs have significantly impacted bilateral trade. In April, Chinese exports to the US dropped by 17.6%. Still, China’s overall exports rose by 8.1%, surpassing expectations. Analysts warn that the negative consequences of the trade conflict may become more apparent in upcoming economic reports.

Amid growing concern over rising consumer costs, Trump expressed optimism about improving US-China relations. Chinese officials, while confident in their ability to manage the dispute, emphasized a preference for cooperation over conflict. The upcoming talks aim to ease long-standing economic tensions and may pave the way for tariff relief.
