There is no consensus in the EU yet on the issue of providing frozen Russian funds to Ukraine - Tusk

It is important that the EU makes a decision in June to extend the freeze on Russian assets, which Hungary may oppose.

This was stated by the head of the Polish government, Donald Tusk, during a press conference for Polish media after a meeting on Sunday in London of the leaders of several EU countries, Great Britain, Norway, Canada and the head of the Turkish Foreign Ministry, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

According to him, there is no unity of views among European leaders on the issue of transferring frozen Russian funds to Ukraine.

“Everyone understands that it would be better to transfer these funds to the defense and restoration of Ukraine. However, there are concerns about negative consequences for the euro and the banking system,” Tusk noted.

He added that Poland is convincing its partners of the need to transfer funds to Ukraine, but Warsaw's vote will not be decisive, since Poland is not part of the eurozone. At the same time, the Polish prime minister assured that the interest from frozen Russian funds is working for Ukraine.

On the other hand, Tusk noted that now it is necessary to focus on extending sanctions on freezing Russian assets in the EU for the next period in June. He expressed concern that Hungary, whose position may also be influenced by Washington, will express its resistance.

“We need to focus on extending the sanctions, because they are working,” Tusk stressed.

As reported by Ukrinform, Tusk previously stated that the closest possible relations with the US are in the interests of Ukraine and Europe and that emotions cannot be allowed to divide Europe and the US.
